President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has showered praises on the immediate past Chief Justice, Justice Kwesi Anin-Yeboah, for his outstanding role as Ghana’s 14th Chief Justice.
The President said Ghanaians owe the retired justice a deep debt of gratitude for dispensing justice throughout his legal career.
President Akufo-Addo made these remarks about Justice Anin-Yeboah at the swearing-in of Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo on Monday, June 12.
“His tenure of office as Chief Justice saw arguably the largest infrastructure development undertaken in the history of the judiciary,” the President said.
He listed a Court of Appeal Complex in Kumasi, residential facilities for Appeals Court judges in Kumasi, new High Courts in the six new regions, 120 courts and 150 duty post bungalows as some of the infrastructure raised under Justice Anin-Yeboah.
“This is the hallmark of his era as Chief Justice as was his strong defence of judicial independence in and out of court.”
President Akufo-Addo lauded the policies implemented by the former Chief Justice to entrench the rule of law, thereby reinforcing “the confidence of the Ghanaian people and shored up our nation’s reputation as a country governed by the rule of law”.
“We owe him a deep debt of gratitude.”
Justice Anin-Yeboah, who was appointed by the current president after Justice Sophia Akuffo, proceeded on retirement on Wednesday, May 24 after he turned 70.
He has been replaced by Justice Torkornoo.
