President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has directed that the additional US$5 million to be paid by Maxam Ghana Limited to the government be donated into the Appiatse Support Fund.
Maxam Ghana Limited has been fined $1 million for culpability in the Appiatse explosion and to pay an additional $5 million to the government.
The explosion killed 13 people and destroyed the entire community.
Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, who disclosed this in a statement indicated that the $1 million, which constitute the administrative fine, forms part of the Internally Generated Funds (IGF) of the Minerals Commission, the regulator of the sector.
He said, “The President has, therefore, directed that the additional $5,000,000 to be paid by Maxam to Government, be donated to the Appiatse Support Fund to support the reconstruction of the community.”
“Accordingly, I have directed the Minerals Commission to ensure that the said Five Million Dollars is paid to the Appiatse Support Fund in accordance with the agreed terms of payment.”
The Fund was established by the government to support the victims of the explosion and for the reconstruction of the community.
