President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has revealed government plan to integrate mental health treatment into the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Addressing physicians and surgeons in Accra, the president emphasized the significance of mental health as a collective concern.
During the meeting, President Akufo-Addo stressed the crucial role of specialists in achieving universal health coverage across all hospitals nationwide.
He announced, “Next year, mental healthcare will be added to the benefits package on the National Health Insurance Scheme.”
“We recognize, however, that the key to achieving the target of universal health coverage is the availability of specialists to serve in all hospitals in the country. It is about time we begin to set our targets higher.”
President Akufo-Addo called for a collaborative effort among various professional health bodies in Ghana to ensure the realization of universal health coverage goals.
He urged the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Ghana Medical and Dental Council, the Ghana Health Service, and the Ministry of Health to work together effectively.
The President expressed optimism that Ghana could attain the health coverage benchmarks achieved by developed nations.
He emphasized the need for coordination and synergy among healthcare professionals and institutions, stating, “These targets, which are being achieved by the developed world where doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals migrate to, can be achieved by Ghana.”
