Ghanaian gospel acapella group Alabaster Box has filed a copyright infringement claim against renowned rapper Samuel Adu Frimpong, known as Medikal. The ensemble alleges that Medikal’s latest release, “Welcome to Africa,” unlawfully incorporates the first 10 seconds of their popular song “Akwabaa.”
On April 8, 2025, Sustineri Attorneys, representing Alabaster Box, sent a strongly worded letter to Medikal. They demanded the immediate removal of “Welcome to Africa” from all streaming services and physical distribution channels. Additionally, the gospel group is seeking a detailed account of all earnings Medikal has generated from the song, including sales, performances, and promotional activities.
The letter is direct and assertive: “The infringing track must be withdrawn immediately from all platforms, both digital and traditional.” It further demands that Medikal cease all live performances of the song, halt any marketing efforts associated with it, and nullify any contracts related to its creation or promotion.
Alabaster Box isn’t stopping there. They’re also pressing Medikal to hand over every contract tied to the song, name every person or company that received a copy, and explain how he plans to claw those copies back. The group wants a complete freeze on anything that keeps the track alive commercially—be it ads, shows, or deals—plus a full rundown of the money it’s raked in and who’s been involved in spreading it.
The legal threat escalates with a warning: if Medikal doesn’t comply, he could face a court-ordered ban on the song’s distribution, a mandate to destroy all existing copies, and a hefty bill for damages.
“Non-compliance will lead to legal action, including claims for exemplary damages for deliberate infringement and all associated costs,” the attorneys cautioned.
As of now, Medikal has stayed silent on the matter, leaving fans and observers waiting for his next move in this brewing controversy.
