Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has officially apologized to the Clerk of the Appointments Committee, Mrs. Gifty Jiagge-Gobah.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin had been critical of Mrs. Gobah since the fracas that erupted during the vetting process last Thursday accusing her of blatant partisanship in favour of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The Majority leader did not mince words, declaring that the Clerk has exposed her NDC bias and must either resign or be removed.
“That lady must either resign as a parliamentary staff or change her posture without delay,” he thundered.
However, in a statement on Tuesday, 4th February 202,5 on the floor of Parliament, Afenyo-Markin issued an unreserved apology to Mrs. Jiagge-Gobah for his remarks.
Afenyo-Markin expressed deep regret over his outburst, acknowledging that he could have handled the situation better and extended his apology not only to Mrs. Gobah but also to her husband, children, extended family, and colleagues in the parliamentary service who may have been affected by his remarks.
“Mrs. Gifty, let me emphasize… that even as we were duly resolving this matter, at least I’ve had a better approach,” he stated.
He acknowledged that while his disappointment in her conduct led to his reaction, he conceded that there was a more appropriate way to address his concerns.
“I will not allow ego to direct me on what to do, especially when she is a woman. One more time, I withdraw this,” he affirmed.
Afenyo-Markin also disclosed that he and Mrs. Gobah had met earlier in the day to discuss some drafts and corrections, helping to restore their working relationship.
“Relationship has been restored. She and I did not have bad blood. She knows the former relationship I had with her,” he added.
The Minority Leader disclosed his intention to write a formal apology letter to Mrs. Gobah for her records, emphasizing that his apology is sincere.
