Dr Bawumia lays plans for Ghana’s Olympic success in Los Angeles 2028

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer for the 2024 Elections, says they will launch a ‘Operation Olympic Glory’ programme to enable the country win more medals at the global sporting fiesta.

With Los Angeles set to host the next Summer Olympics in 2028, Ghana would return to the 34th Olympiad to compete for medals.

Ghana’s recent performance at the Paris Olympics was not encouraging, with none of its athletes able to enter the medal zones in various sporting disciplines.

Ghana has never won an Olympic medal in track and field, instead securing five medals in boxing and football.

But Dr. Bawumia, during the NPP’s manifesto launch in Takoradi on Sunday, laid down plans to get Ghana on the medal podium in Los Angeles 2028.

“Start an ‘Operation Olympic Glory’ programme by dedicating resources towards the preparation and readiness of athletes to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, USA, including, where necessary, targeting specific sports for medals,” he said.

Vice President Dr. Bawumia also revealed plans of setting up a Sports Development Fund to aid in the development of sports infrastructure and unearthing talents at the grassroots. He went on to say that they intend to build more Astroturfs in every constituency after successfully completing 150 so far.

Dr. Bawumia added that if elected, he would build six 5,000-seater stadiums for the new regions and also provide each Premier League club with a new bus.
