2024 Elections: Majority leader calls on NPP supporters to prevent another hung Parliament

Majority Leader of Parliament, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to intensify their efforts to secure an absolute majority in Parliament, warning against the challenges of another hung parliament.

Speaking at the launch of the NPP’s 2024 manifesto on Sunday, August 18, the Effutu MP praised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s leadership, describing it as unparalleled in Ghana’s history.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized that having a split parliament with a Speaker from the opposition, combined with global economic crises, created unprecedented challenges for President Akufo-Addo.

“No president in Ghana’s history has had to navigate such circumstances like Akufo-Addo has. Yet, he has led with unmatched composure and determination. Nana, we thank you!” he declared.

He questioned how former President John Mahama would have handled the multiple crises—such as the financial sector crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, and the global cost-of-living crisis—if he had been in power.

Afenyo-Markin cautioned against returning to the era of “dumsor,” a term associated with frequent power outages under Mahama’s leadership.

The Majority Leader stressed the NPP government’s accomplishments over the past eight years, citing achievements in infrastructure, education, health, national security, agriculture, and energy.

He argued that the NPP has done more for national security and empowered farmers than any previous administration.

Afenyo-Markin urged Ghanaians to recall the state of the nation under Mahama, noting that the NPP has stabilized the economy and laid a strong foundation for future job creation.

He criticized Mahama’s record on corruption and questioned his commitment to the welfare of Ghanaians, urging voters to consider the consequences of returning to his leadership.
