The Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Projects (SEHP) has initiated critical and timely interventions in areas of health, education, and women empowerment. These include but not limited to the following;
HEALTH
- Providing essential health items to One (1) teaching hospital, Two (2) regional hospitals, Seven (7) district/ municipal hospitals, Four (4) health centres, Eighteen (18) Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compounds, Two (2) Psychiatric Hospitals and One (1) Medical Research Laboratory.
ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT
2.SEHP has instituted the Shea Empowerment Initiative, a women economic empowerment project. So far, one thousand two hundred (1,200) women have been trained on quality sheanut picking, shea kernel production and preservation.
3.Also, one thousand two hundred (1,200) safety tools including head pans, head lamps, hand gloves, wellington boots and certificates of training have been given to these one thousand two hundred women (1,200).
4.As part of the initiative, four (4) shea processing factories in the Northern, Savanah, Upper West and Upper East Regions of Ghana (Gushegu, Walewale, Wa, and Chana Paga Municipalities) are at 97 percentile stages of completion.
5.SEHP is training about 2000 underprivileged girls in fashion and other vocational skill sets, provide start-ups, and financial literacy training under the Network for Enterprise Development Learning through Sewing for Girls – N4G.
6.Hajia Samira is empowering women economically through the SEHP Skills and Entrepreneurial Development Initiative (SEDI). The objective of the initiative is to improve the socio-economic well-being of women generally, throug training, provision of capital, star-up kits and the establishment of micro-enterprise schemes that are of local relevance.
7.The Skills and Entrepreneurial Development Initiative has trained 2100 women in yogurt making in eight districts across the 5 Northern Regions.
8.1300 women have had their capacities improved with training in soap and detergent making in 14 districts in Greater Accra, Ashanti and the 5 Northern Regions.
- In partnership with the defunct Ministry of Business Development and National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan (NEIP), SEHP trainerd one hundred and fifty (150) women in Financial Management, Bookkeeping, Building a Culture of Business Resilience, Home Management and how to identify business opportunities during and post-COVID economy.
- About seventy-one (71) women have been trained and received loans ranging from GHS 5,000 – GHS 10,000,
11:Also, seventy (70) traders have received training and interest-free loans under this initiative.
MATERNAL HEALTH
- In an effort to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality in Ghana, she has initiated the “Safe Delivery Project” through SEHP. The “Safe Delivery Project” aims to distribute one hundred thousand (100,000) well-resourced birth kits to expectant mothers in deprived communities across Ghana.
- Over 6000 birth kits have been distributed to expectant mothers in the East Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region, saving a lot of lives.
ADVOCACY
- Moreover, she is an advocate for the “Combined Maternal and Child Health Record Book Project” – a Ghana Health Service initiative, with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) – to integrate existing maternal and child health record books. She is also supporting the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on “Nurturing Care Framework for Early Childhood Development,” a project focused primarily on childcare. Also, she is an advocate for the “Ghanaians against Child Abuse’ (GACA) Campaign, a Government of Ghana, and UNICEF project.
15.The Second Lady is spearheading a Coalition of People against Sexual and Gender-based Violence and Harmful Practices (CoPASH). The mandate of CoPASH is to bring together agencies, organisations, and individuals who are passionate about the rights of women and girls, to advocate for better case management for victims of “Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and Harmful Practices” (SGBVs/HPs). This initiative is being supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA),
EDUCATION AND LITERACY
16.Hajia Samira has so far distributed about one hundred thousand (100,000) books to over two hundred thousand (200,000) pupils in sixty (60) basic schools across Ghana, as part of her “Get Ghana Reading Campaign.”
17.She is also the Patron of the Samira Bawumia Literature Prize, a launchpad for aspiring Ghanaian writers to share their art with the world. It is an annual literary prize for the best short fiction, poetry, and non-fiction prose written by young Ghanaians living in Ghana. The literature prize was launched in 2020 with over two thousand (2,000) entries received.
18.Mrs. Bawumia is the Chief Trustee of the SEHP Educational Trust Fund, an Educational Trust set up to provide scholarships to brilliant but needy students in tertiary institutions. The Trust has so far supported 54 students in several tertiary institutions in Ghana.
