Abronye DC for court today; after night behind bars

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, spent Tuesday night in police cells following his arrest and detention by the Accra Regional Police Command.

Popularly referred to as Abronye DC, the Bono Chairman was invited for questioning after he claimed former President John Dramani Mahama is planning to stage a coup with the support of the international terrorist group, Al Qaeda.

A statement by the police signed by DSP Juliana Obeng indicated preliminary investigation following his invitation to assist the investigation of his claim established the purported coup allegation was untrue and likely to cause a breach of the peace.

According to the police, Abronye has therefore formally been arrested and charged on two counts of publication of false news and offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace.

“He has been detained and will be arraigned before the court on Wednesday, 16th February, 2022.”

“We urge the public to be circumspect in all their dealings including pronouncements since anyone who falls foul of the law will be taken through the due process of the law,” the statement said.

The invitation and subsequent arrest come days after the Police picked up a convener of the #FixTheCountry Movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, who is now facing treason felony charges for threat of coup on social media if the controversial Electronic Transfer Levy Bill.
