Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban S.K. Bagbin has advocated constitutional reforms to give a more prominent role in leadership to the ‘real leaders of the Ghanaian people.’
According to him, religious, traditional and leaders of Civil Society are the true leaders of the Ghanaians who simply delegate their authority to the political class who are elected into office to represent them at that level.
Ghanaian politicians, he said, need to accept and acknowledge this reality in order to truly help the country to develop faster.
Speaker Alban Bagbin made the call on Thursday, 28th April, 2022 during the 10th Annual Night of Power in the Holy Month of Ramadan at Parliament House.
He said, “As leaders, particularly political leaders, let’s humble ourselves and accept that the real leaders of our society are the spiritual leaders, the traditional leaders and leaders of Civil Society. They are the real leaders in our society, in our country Ghana and everywhere.”
“They simply delegate their authority to us by electing us to represent them at the political level. Don’t let us lord it over them. Let’s give prominent roles to this group of leaders, the true leaders of the people of Ghana.”
He pointed out that the Ghanaian people believe more in their spiritual leaders, their traditional leaders and leaders of Civil Society than the political leaders and questioned why politicians will want to lead the country without these true leaders.
He condemned the system where a person arrives from Europe with money, contributes to a political party and then such person is appointed Chief Executive to lord it over the chiefs who are essentially in charge of the people in the district.
“How can that system work to produce good results? We must change it. I am for it. I want to see our Constitution go through real reforms to adopt what is truly our own.”
“I want to see a more prominent role played by these leaders at the national level and at the local level,” he added.
