Airports MD sacking is just the beginning – Minority Whip warns

Deputy Minority Whip in Parliament, Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, has stated the unceremonious sacking of the Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company is a manifestation of the autocratic tendency creeping into Ghana’s political atmosphere.

According to him, following the upheaval at the Kotoka Airport with the opening of the private lounge by McDan and subsequent suspension of the lounge by the Airport authorities, the sacking of Mr. Yaw Kwakwa should not come as a surprise.

In an interview in Parliament, the Minority Whip disclosed that what makes the termination of Mr. Kwakwa’s appointment more shocking was the fact he was in Parliament at that material moment on Wednesday when his termination letter was forwarded to him.

“He was in a meeting with the Transport Committee and explaining to both the Majority and Minority members the developments at the Kotoka Airport when they ‘fired his letter to him.”

“Telling him that what you are revealing we don’t want it, so stop and go,” he stated.

He alleged that Ghana’s Airport or what used to be called the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority is now being given to a party functionary, McDan Aviation.

“And when well-meaning Ghanaians want to talk the government and the President himself, he is sacking them.”

“So this is a clear manifestation of keep quiet and suffer,” he added.

Hon. Ahmed lamented at claims of a possible clean-up exercise in the insurance sector and stated this is another ruse to collapse some of these companies in order to strengthen the insurance firms belonging to cronies and government apparatchiks.

He argued that banks in the country have been collapsed except the Minister of Finance Ken Ofoir-Atta’s own bank, which has emerged as the strongest bank following the sector clean-up, though it was one of the smallest and weakest prior to the exercise.

The Whip warned this is just the beginning but stressed the Minority caucus will be briefed by the leadership and an appropriate response will be issued.
