Akosombo Dam spillage: Volta NDC urgently appeals for support for disaster victims

The Volta Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a heartfelt appeal to all compassionate Ghanaians, urging immediate assistance for the victims affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

The NDC, as a significant stakeholder in the region, has expressed deep concern for the communities devastated by the spillage and called for urgent aid to alleviate the dire circumstances faced by the affected residents.

The spillage, caused by the Volta River Authority (VRA), has wreaked havoc on several communities along the Lower Volta Basin, particularly impacting areas within North Tongu, South Tongu, Anlo, Keta, and Ketu South Municipalities.

Reports indicate that more than forty thousand individuals, including children, nursing mothers, youths, and the elderly, have been displaced and left in vulnerable conditions.

Homes and buildings have been submerged, livelihoods destroyed, and access to basic amenities such as clean water and healthcare facilities has been severely compromised.

The affected communities are also at risk of potential disease outbreaks due to the unsanitary conditions resulting from the flooding.

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and VRA’s interventions, according to the NDC, have been insufficient in meeting the urgent needs of the victims.

The party stressed the necessity for collective action, calling on various religious, civic, and media organizations, as well as individuals and businesses, to extend their support to those affected by the disaster.

Mawutor Agbavitor, Volta Regional Chairman of the NDC, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “There is the need for us to delve into our humanity as Ghanaians and immediately come to the aid of our brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, and sons and daughters who, through no fault of theirs, are reaping the excruciating consequences of VRA’s effort to save an important national asset like the Akosombo Hydroelectricity generation installation.”

The NDC has outlined specific items urgently required, including toiletries, drinking water, food, mattresses, blankets, clothing, waste bins, and sanitary products, among others.

The party called on media outlets including Joy News/FM, Citi TV/FM, UTV, Metro TV, TV3, GBC/GTV, Peace FM, TV XYZ, GhOne and others, as well as religious and community leaders, to mobilize resources and support the affected communities.

The Volta NDC passionately urged all generous individuals, groups, and organizations to promptly assist in giving back life to these fellow Ghanaian citizens who were unfortunately caught up in the disaster.
