Akufo-Addo is the most ‘borrowed President’ of the 4th Republic – Minority leader

Minority leader Haruna Iddrisu has described President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the most ‘borrowed’ President of the 4th Republic and wondered the type of economy he will leave behind in 2025.

According to him, in President Akufo-Addo’s maiden address in 2017 after assuming the reins of power, lamented former President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC have left behind a public debt of GH¢ 120 billion.

“Today, it is GH¢350 billion, 81% of GDP. The country is at the precipice of bankruptcy,” he said.

Concluding debate on the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Tuesday 5th April, the Minority leader disclosed that the Energy Sector Levy (ESLA) that the President and his party bastardized the NDC administration for bringing in to manage problems within the energy sector has been mortgaged.

According to him, the Akufo-Addo-led NPP administration has borrowed against the ESLA.

He expressed worry for the future of the country, particularly the way the administration is mortgaging and borrowing against various funds.

He said, “I worry for the future of the country particularly that ESLA has been mortgaged, borrowed against; GETFund has been mortgaged, borrowed against; District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), mortgaged and some borrowing made against it.”

“What type of economy will we inherit in 2025, we shudder to ask,” he stated.
