Akufo-Addo receives France’s prestigious Legion of Honour Award

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has received France’s highest national distinction, the “Grand Officier de la Légion d’Honneur” (Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour), in recognition of his significant contributions to democracy, human rights, and strengthening Ghana-France relations.

At a prestigious ceremony held at the Élysée Palace in Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron awarded President Akufo-Addo the honor, lauding him as a leader whose commitment to democratic values has “resonated not just within Ghana, but around the world.”

Macron expressed France’s appreciation for President Akufo-Addo’s advocacy on the global stage.

“Your dedication to democratic principles and human rights aligns closely with the ideals we hold dear in France. This award is our way of celebrating your tireless work to uphold these values,” he stated

The National Order of the Legion of Honour, founded by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, is France’s highest decoration, bestowed upon individuals who exemplify exceptional service to the nation or defend ideals upheld by France.

The Order is divided into five categories: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, and Knight.

President Akufo-Addo’s recognition as a Grand Officer places him in the esteemed company of global leaders such as former German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Receiving the honor, President Akufo-Addo expressed gratitude for the recognition, saying, “This award is an affirmation of the warm and enduring friendship between Ghana and France.”

“I am deeply humbled and equally encouraged to continue advancing the causes we share—freedom, equality, and democratic governance.”

President Akufo-Addo’s visit to France also included bilateral talks with President Macron, focusing on strengthening the Ghana-France partnership.

Additionally, President Akufo-Addo participated in an event organized by France Volontaires, France’s platform for international volunteerism, and a high-level UNESCO event honoring Amadou Mahtar-M’Bow, UNESCO’s first African Director-General.

Macron emphasized the importance of Ghana’s role in promoting peace and stability within West Africa, stating, “Ghana, under your leadership, has been a beacon of stability in a region faced with challenges. We are proud to count Ghana as a steadfast ally.”
