General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has stated that the resignation of Alan Kyerematen from the party was premeditated and an irrevocable decision.
According to him, until the announcement on Monday, September 25, the former Minister for Trade and Industry had not given any inclination of leaving the party, though he had made his grievances public.
He expressed disappointment with how Kyerematen chose to resign, through a press conference and without prior notice to the party.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, September 26, Justin Kodua stated that during a visit by the National Chairman to Mr. Kyerematen after the August 26 Special Electoral College, there was no indication that he intended to resign or go independent.
“This suggests a premeditated and irrevocable decision,” he said.
Regarding Mr. Kyerematen’s reasons for resigning, Justin Kodua addressed the allegations of unconstitutional decisions by the National Council regarding the Super Delegates Conference. He argued that the National Council had not violated the party’s constitution in making decisions regarding the venue and voting procedures for the presidential primaries.
He also rejected Mr. Kyerematen’s assertion that the party had been “hijacked by a selected group of Party leaders and elders, government appointees and behind-the-curtain power brokers.
He cited the expansion of the Electoral College to include a larger number of delegates, emphasizing decentralization and broader inclusion.
The General Secretary acknowledged Mr. Kyerematen’s contributions to the NPP’s growth and development over the years adding, “We respect his decision and extend our gratitude for the services rendered to the NPP and the nation.”
He also commended Mr. Kyerematen for acknowledging the government’s achievements during his tenure as a government appointee and urged other sector Ministers and government appointees to do the same.
He stressed the historical resilience and unity of the NPP, noting that many faithful members who never had the opportunity to lead the party or the country remained dedicated to the party’s values until their passing.
He urged members to focus on the upcoming 2024 general election and work together to achieve their goals.
“Our party’s strength has always been derived from the unity and resilience of our members, and we call upon every one of you to rally together and uphold the principles that define us,” he emphasized.
He encouraged party members to remain committed and dedicated as they prepare for the upcoming elections.
