Anti-LGBTQ Bill: No U-turn will be tolerated – Rev. Ntim Fordjour warns Mahama

The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. Ntim Fordjour, has notified President John Dramani Mahama, demanding unwavering support for the private member’s bill to outlaw LGBTQ+ activities rather than pushing a rival government-backed version.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on February 28, 2025, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour insisted that Mahama must prove his dedication to ‘proper family values’ by endorsing the existing legislation already before Parliament.

Ntim Fordjour’s remarks come in response to Mahama’s recent announcement of ongoing talks with the Speaker of Parliament to reintroduce the government-sponsored Proper Family Values Bill targeting LGBTQ+ activities.

The Assin South MP, a co-sponsor of the private bill, stressed that it has already been resubmitted and is awaiting parliamentary action.

“We’ve done the work—our bill is in place. If the President wants to add anything, he can do so after it’s passed,” he said, urging Mahama to align with their efforts rather than compete.

He criticized Mahama’s approach, arguing that a separate executive bill dismisses the legitimacy of private member initiatives, a cornerstone of parliamentary independence.

“The President needs a reminder: Parliament isn’t his puppet. He can’t undermine our rights to sponsor bills. We’ll cooperate if he brings his own, but he must respect what’s already on the table,” Fordjour declared.

The MP’s stance sets up a showdown, warning Mahama against any retreat from the anti-LGBTQ+ fight and positioning the private bill as a non-negotiable test of the President’s values.
