The Minister for Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has strongly denied allegations made against him by Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central and an aspiring presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The allegations were made during a rally held in Accra on Saturday, September 16, 2023.
During the rally, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong claimed that a certain minister of state from Bantama had instructed delegates to vote for His Excellency, Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the NPP presidential primary.
Agyapong suggested that this endorsement was made in anticipation of H.E. John Mahama’s possible presidency and aimed at making the NPP more attractive to Ghanaians after four years of his potential leadership.
Although Hon. Kennedy Agyapong did not explicitly mention the name of the minister of state, Mr. Asenso-Boakye, who is currently the only minister of state from Bantama, assumed the comments were directed at him.
Asenso-Boakye, in a post on his Facebook account, called the allegations a ‘blatant lie’ and described them as ‘ludicrous’ and ‘politically puerile.
The NPP government, he stressed, is committed to improving the well-being of Ghanaians and earning their continued support.
He said, “The false attribution by Hon Ken Agyapong is clearly a mischievous lie deliberately made with the sole intention to cause disaffection for me, sully my good standing within the Party and neutralize whatever leverage I have on the Delegates.”
“My view on the NPP presidential primary is widely known to the party members and it’s that; Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia is the extraordinary candidate that the NPP needs to break the ‘eight’.”
Asenso-Boakye urged party members to disregard the allegations and instead focus on building unity within the NPP, which he believes is essential for victory in the 2024 elections.
Hon Ken Agyapong’s allegations have created a stir within the NPP, highlighting the intensifying competition among party members as they prepare for the upcoming presidential primary and the 2024 general elections.
As the party navigates these challenges, the call for unity and a united front becomes increasingly important to secure electoral success.
