Ashaiman MP insists on probe into unlawful military operation

Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, Ernest Norgbey has reiterated calls for the unlawful deployment of soldiers at the constituency following the death of Tropper Imoro Sherif to be investigated.

Soldiers swooped into Ashaiman on 7th March 2023 supposedly to find the alleged killers of the young soldier during which some 180 innocent people were arrested but later released without charge.

According to the MP, the investigation must establish the identities of the officers responsible for the unlawful deployment and the officers who took the law into their own hands to brutalize, torture and dehumanise the innocent residents of Ashaiman in the name of finding the alleged killers.

“The State must punish all those involved in the unlawful deployment and the resulting hooliganism that brought the enviable image of the Ghana Armed Forces into disrepute,” he said.

The MP, in a statement on the arrest of the six suspects, said this is a great step towards unravelling the mystery surrounding the shocking death of Sherif Imoro.

He commended the Ghana Police Service for their calm but swift and professional conduct thus far in meticulously investigating the circumstances surrounding the trooper’s death.

He urged the Attorney-General’s Department to ensure swift, fair, fearless and successful prosecution of all the suspects involved in the alleged killing and for our courts to return a safe verdict that serves as a bold line of deterrence to all persons who may want to break the law.

He consoled the family of Trooper Imoro over the gruesome killing of their beloved son and the irreplaceable loss, grief and pain it has inflicted.

“In the same vein, I extend my heartfelt sympathies to all the people of Ashaiman who suffered various cases of abuse at the hands of our military on the 7th day of March 2023.”

“I am also thanking all citizens of the world who have sent messages of condolence, sympathy and support to the family of Trooper Imoro and the victims of the unlawful military operation that desecrated constitutionally guaranteed human rights in Ashaiman last week,” he added.
