Constituency Chairmen of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Regional say they are poised to pick a winnable candidate for the party.
According to them, the contest is all about choosing a candidate who can lead the NPP to victory in next year’s election and not about favouring fellow tribesmen,
In a statement yesterday reiterating their support for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Constituency Chairmen said the Vice President has widespread support from the grassroots of the party, and their decision to vote for him massively in the Super Delegates on Saturday, is in line with the choice of the grassroots.
Dominic Bosompem, Dean of Constituency Chairmen & Odotobri Constituency Chairman in a message further noted that Dr. Bawumia is clearly the choice of the grassroots.
ssue and have arrived at a firm resolution that our grassroots and polling station executives are right. We are, therefore, seizing this moment to unanimously express our agreement to this call.’ he argued.
Mr. Bosompem further noted; “We will also urge and entreat all the Constituency Chairmen to heed to the call from the grassroots and polling station executives and vote for Dr. Bawumia in their numbers. Because this is the shining moment for us as the Ashanti Region to make history and settle the score in the minds of Ghanaians that the Ashanti NPP delegate does not vote on tribal lines.’
The group believes “one day somehow, it will be the turn of one of ours, and we will all join to push that person. This is not tribalistic. This is objective. One of ours someday will get our push, but for now, it is not our turn. This project is simply making Ashanti Greater in NPP. ”
The group indicated We the Association of Constituency Chairmen acting on the thunderous widespread demand by the grassroots and polling station executives in our various constituencies to vote for their choice in the upcoming Super Delegates Conference, are making this public statement that we are ready to heed to this call from our party people”.
Dr. Bawumia has been tipped by many to win both the Super Delegates election on Saturday, as well as the main contest in November, following the overwhelming support he has received from all levels of the party, especially from the grassroots during his nationwide tour.
Many have tried to play the tribal cards against him, but party stakeholders, especially in the Ashanti Region, have clearly rejected such schemes and the Vice President, as the Ashanti Chairmen’s statement indicated, is poised to sweep the votes.
Members of Parliament in the region, have also thrown their weight behind the Vice President.
Below is the full statement by the Association of the Ashanti Regional Chairmen.
