The Assin North chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Felix Benefo, is predicting a landslide victory for the embattled MP, James Gyakye Quayson, in the by-election slated for 27 June.
The seat became vacant following a 17 May 2023 judgement of a seven-member Supreme Court panel that the election and swearing-in of Quayson was unconstitutional, null and void.
The apex court held that Quayson was not qualified to contest for the position of MP at the time of filing his nomination forms because of his dual citizenship status.
The NPP on Wednesday (7 June) elected Charles Opoku, a popular philanthropist in the Central Region as its candidate for the polls.
Appearing on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (8 June), Benefo said: “We are going to win by about 82%.”
“For a by-election like this, you can have the people to vote like in a general election, but in percentage we are going to increase our votes,” Benefo added.

Speaking on the same programme, Ben Essah, the NPP chairman for Assin North said the governing party is in a pole position to win the by-election.
“The 2020 election, Gyakye Quayson won because of ‘skirt and blouse’ voting and we even saw that in the presidential election, President Akufo-Addo won over 1,000 votes.
“Now that we have conducted our internal election and both parties have agreed to campaign for each other, it is not going to be easy for the NDC,” Essah said. “I am sure we are going to win this election with a wider margin.”
