Assin North MP declares innocence: Trusts Judicial System to clear his name

Embattled member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, has declared he is innocent of the criminal charges that have been preferred against him by the Attorney-General.

According to him, though he cannot comment on the matter, which is before court, he is in high spirits because he believes justice will be served.

“All I will say to you at this point is, as you are all aware, this matter is in court and I believe and trust in the judicial system because that is the way for people to measure their innocence,” he stated.

The Assin North MP has not been seen in public for a while after the Attorney-General preferred criminal charges against him.

Speaking during an interview in Parliament on Friday, however, the MP stated he has absolute confidence in the judicial system to be fair to him.

The Cape Coast High Court in July 2021 annulled the Assin North Parliamentary elections and declared Mr Quayson was not eligible to contest the polls.

Mr Quayson has since been legally fighting to set this aside with the matter currently pending at the Court of Appeal.

A resident of the Assin North Constituency, Michael Ankomah Nimfah who initiated the action against the MP at the High Court sought the intervention of the Supreme Court to stop the MP from performing Parliamentary duties.

That matter remains pending as court officials have been unable to serve the MP with the court processes amidst allegations that a court bailiff was assaulted by the MP’s bodyguard.

The Attorney General’s office has since filed criminal charges against the MP including forgery, perjury and also deceiving a public officer and knowingly making a false declaration.
