Speaker of Parliament and President of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has emphasized the importance of upholding democratic values and principles in parliaments across the Commonwealth.
Addressing distinguished delegates at the opening ceremony of the 66th CPA Annual Conference in Accra on Wednesday, October 4, Speaker Bagbin acknowledged the importance of understanding the factors contributing to the loss of trust in democratic processes.
He pointed out issues such as high-level corruption, nepotism, and policies deepening poverty, which have eroded public confidence in political leadership.
He called for a collective effort to rebuild trust in democratic institutions, urging delegates to work towards restoring dignity to elected offices.
Reflecting on the conference theme, “The Commonwealth Charter, 10 years on: values and principles for Parliaments to uphold,” Speaker Bagbin underscored the necessity of ensuring effective separation of powers within governments.
He urged for greater efforts to empower oversight committees, enhance civic education, and facilitate public participation, emphasizing that these actions are fundamental to strengthening parliaments and preserving democracy.
Mr. Bagbin encouraged delegates to not only engage in the conference discussions but also embrace the warmth and hospitality of Ghana.
He commended the efforts of the local organizing committee and the CPA secretariat for their hard work in making the conference a success.
The 66th CPA Annual Conference promises to be a platform for meaningful discussions, reflecting the commitment of Commonwealth nations to strengthen democratic values and principles, as emphasized by Speaker Bagbin’s insightful address.
