Bawumia wins NPP flagbearer elections in Mahama’s Bole Bamboi

The presidential primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have taken place and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the clear front-runner.

According to provisional results, Dr. Bawumia is leading by a large margin over Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, with Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto and Francis Addai-Nimoh trailing far behind.

Although Ken Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, won several constituencies, particularly in the Central and Greater Accra regions, Dr. Bawumia emerged victorious in most constituencies.

The winner of the polls has their eyes set on the 2024 elections, where they will face John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Dr. Bawumia won in the Bole Bamboi Constituency, where Mr. Mahama served as MP until 2009 when he became Vice President.

Out of a total of 587 valid votes, he was able to garner 391 votes, which gave him a significant victory over Mr. Ohene Agyapong, who came second with 170 votes.

Dr. Afriyie Akoto, the former Agric Minister, who served in the Fourth Parliament with Mr. Mahama, managed to poll only 14 votes while the former Mampong MP had 7 votes.

With most of the results now collated, Dr. Bawumia is likely to be declared the winner of the internal elections.

The announcement is expected to be made officially at the Accra Sports Stadium.
