Bawumia’s running mate will come from Ashanti Running – Joe Wise reveals

The First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei-Owusu (Joe Wise), has joined the chorus of voices advocating for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate to be selected from the Ashanti region.

As competition intensifies among some New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament for the coveted position, notable figures in the party, including Osei-Owusu, believe that a running mate from the Ashanti region is crucial for success in the 2024 general election.

In an interview with JoyNews, Osei-Owusu, who is also rumored to be a potential candidate, confirmed the widespread agreement within the party regarding the geographical origin of the running mate.

He stated, “It is generally agreed in the party that if Bawumia wins, his running mate should come from the Ashanti region,” adding, “I think so,” when asked if Dr. Bawumia had consented to this agreement.

Osei-Owusu emphasized that the ideal candidate for the position should possess values such as integrity, command respect within and outside the party, and complement the leadership style of the new flagbearer.

While acknowledging the eligibility of candidates like Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, he emphasized that the field is wide, and the final decision rests with Dr. Bawumia.

Explaining the importance of selecting a candidate from the Ashanti region, Osei-Owusu noted that it would instill confidence among the people in the region, recognizing their significant contributions to the party.

He stated, “I agree that the person must come from the Ashanti region because, in our party’s dynamics, it would help a lot to select from the Ashanti region.”

However, despite being mentioned as a potential candidate, Osei-Owusu expressed the need to allow Dr. Bawumia the space to carefully assess the available options and make an informed decision.
