Political Scientist, Dr. Richard Amoako Baah, has observed that holding the Vice President position does not automatically make Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate for 2024.
Other people, he said, have been in the queue long before Dr. Bawumia was brought into the NPP by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
“Nana Addo brought Dr. Bawumia in; He was not an NPP inside man. People opposed that but he was adamant.”
“So we said okay let him go. He went and they lost; went again they lost and went again they lost. That is 12 years. 12 years of the others in line still waiting.
Addressing the impending NPP presidential primaries during an interview, Dr. Amoako Baa argued in most countries this will not happen because two times and that opportunity will pass on to someone else in line.
According to him, in the case of President Akufo-Addo because he had the name and the recognition so the NPP allowed him to go again because they had great hopes in him.
“But look at the situation. You brought a young man in 12 years pretty much the shadow Vice President. Now you won four years, that’s 16 years now.”
“He is going to go another four years, that is 20 years. What happens to those in line who were challenging Nana Addo?”
“After 20 years, they should be fair to the party and step aside and let others also compete,” Dr Baah said.
He argued that is where fairness is and added, “But you don’t say I want this one because I picked him Vice President and therefore… What, is he the only person in the party,” he queried?
