The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has refused to resign despite calls from the Minority NDC caucus.
Dr. Addison, in a terse statement, stated that he and his deputy governors would remain in office and dismissed allegations of financial impropriety.
He criticized the recent demonstration in Accra as completely unnecessary.
The Minority NDC caucus demanded the Governor to resign, citing worries about alleged money printing and the bank’s losses in 2021.
Dr. Addison addressed these concerns, stating that the Bank of Ghana acted within the bounds of the law when providing monetary financing in 2020 and 2022 to address specific crises.
He also clarified that the losses incurred in 2021 resulted from the central bank’s debt holdings being impaired, which was necessary to comply with an International Monetary Fund (IMF) program.
Dr. Addison emphasized that the decision to construct the new bank headquarters was made in 2019, during a profitable period for the bank, and not during times of financial turmoil.
He acknowledged the Minority’s concerns about their inability to present their petition but urged cooperation and dialogue, highlighting alternative channels for addressing grievances.
