The Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC) has made a passionate appeal to the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin and the leadership to reinstitute the annual training workshops for members.
According to the Press Corps, these annual clinics have somehow been truncated without explanation over the past couple of years.
Vice Dean of the Parliamentary Press Corps, Stephen Odoi-Larbi, made the appeal when he delivered the vote of thanks on behalf of the Dean, Simon Agianab, at the commissioning of a new Press Center on Friday 18th February, 2022.
Leadership of the Press Corps, he disclosed, is currently crisscrossing the offices of the Director of Public Affairs and Clerk-to-Parliament to accept its budget proposal for an orientation workshop for members.
“We, therefore, like to use this opportunity to appeal to you, our father, to intervene and assist in fast-tracking this process for us,” he said.
He stated these workshops had been a regular feature in the past and had served as both training and orientation workshops for new members of the Parliament media and an upgrade for existing members.
He also lamented that the training workshop the Public Accounts Committee has been holding for the Press Corps has also ceased.
After cutting the ribbon to the office, an excited Odoi-Larbi noted the long journey to get conducive office space for the work of reporters in the Legislature of Ghana has ended.
According to him, the days of sweating while struggling for stable internet connectivity to file stories will no longer be an issue.
He said, “This new office is spacious enough to accommodate all members of the Corps and offers us some comfort. Covid-19 came with physical distancing but our current office offered no opportunity for that.”
“Members had to cramp themselves into the small space to discharge their responsibilities as reporters while some even had to stand on their feet to file their reports.”
“Rt. Hon. Speaker, the journey has been long and arduous but we take solace in the fact that today we are here to the glory of God Almighty,” he added.
The Vice-Dean expressed profound gratitude to Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, Speaker of the 8th Parliament, former Speaker Prof. Aaron Michael Oquaye, the Leadership of the House, Clerk-to-Parliament and former Deans of the PPC, Andrew Edwin Arthur and Nana Agyemang Birikorang, for the diverse roles they all played in getting the office Space for the Corps.
He also thanked Information Minister, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah for donating another television set for the new Press Center.
