History repeated itself as Ghanaian champions Kumasi Asante Kotoko were eliminated from this season’s CAF Champions League after losing 3-1 on penalties to Burkina Faso Premier League title-holders RC Kadiogo.
The Porcupine Warriors went into the second-leg tie with a 1-0 victory from the first-leg clash in Benin following Isaac Oppong’s impressive last-gasp finish and only needed a drawn scoreline to progress to the next round.
However, Kadiogo cancelled the deficit as early as the 15th minute with a nice finish.
Kotoko fought to pull parity and secure qualification to the next round of the competition but the Burkinabes remained resolute in defence as the Porcupine looked obsolete.
The game headed for shootout after the end of regulation time and Kadiogo progressed to the second preliminary round as they won 3-1 on penalties to set up a clash with AS Vita Club.
