The Minority Caucus in Parliament has slammed what it says are bizarre accusations against Speaker Bagbin and the NDC Caucus by the Majority New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Majority is only engaging in a “calculated propaganda campaign” to sway public opinion unfairly.
The controversy began when Speaker Bagbin, citing a legal injunction by South Dayi MP Rockson-Nelson Etse K. Dafeamekpor, halted the confirmation of the government’s latest ministerial nominees.
This move came in the wake of a presidential letter advising against sending the anti-gay bill to the president for assent, leading to significant discord within Parliament.
The Majority, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, expressed dismay at Speaker Bagbin’s decision, emphasizing that the President’s respect for legal injunctions pending before the Supreme Court should not be construed as undermining Parliament’s authority. They accused the Speaker and the NDC Caucus of obstructing government business.
In a rebuttal, however, the Minority leader described the accusations as bizarre, unfortunate and false.
The statement further criticized the Majority for deliberate distortions and grand propaganda aimed at discrediting Speaker Bagbin and the Minority Caucus.
The Minority leader lauded the Speaker for his leadership and competence in guiding Parliament’s proceedings amid such a contentious political climate.
The Minority Caucus commended Mr Bagbin for his “distinguished leadership and the very competent manner in which he continues to guide Parliament.
