CHAN chances: Kotoku Royals ‘Weep’ over League halt

Kotoku Royals Communications Head, Okatakyie Afrifa, isn’t overwhelmed by the quality of opposition in Ghana’s CHAN group but is worried about the effects of the league’s break in momentum on the team’s qualification chances.

Ghana’s Black Galaxies have been drawn in Group C of the 2022 Championship of African Nations (CHAN) in Algeria with Morocco, Sudan and Madagascar.

Morocco has won the competition eligible to only players competing in national leagues on the African continent in 2018 and 2020 while Sudan finished third in the 2018 edition. Madagascar will make its debut in the 2022 edition.

Speaking to CITI Sports, Afrifa was cautious about Ghana’s qualification chances mainly due to the break in the betPawa Ghana Premier League season.

“I think it’s okay for us but…the league is not also going on. Where are we going to get the players to go to that tournament don’t forget the tournament is around I think the first or second week of January. That is another big blow for motherland Ghana but aside that I think the group Ghana is in is not quite bad at all” he stated.

The betPawa Ghana League is on hold till at least October 14 due to a court injunction fronted by Ashanti Gold Sporting Club over human rights abuse stemming from a Ghana Football Association (GFA) ruling over the team’s alleged role in a match fixing scandal.
