The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has revealed that there is much work to be done in the journey towards the sustainable development of Accra.
She said nurturing a city that is resilient, inclusive, and environmentally conscious was crucial for the country.
According to Honourable Elizabeth Sackey, the Mayor of Accra, local governance stands uniquely paramount in the heart of global governance.
Speaking at the launch of 125th anniversary celebration since the establishment of AMA, she stated that over the years, there has been an identical attempt to work very hard in the design of policy that ensures that local governance delivers the needed achievements.
She noted that the Metropolitan efforts of addressing the concerns of the city underwent remarkable years of struggles, thoughts and hard work of planning and execution.
The AMA Mayor indicated that to build a city more resilient over the past 125 years of existence, has been the cardinal objective which has remained at the forefront of “our planning and design of programmes and projects including working together with our communities to fulfill the dream of a smart City.”
Honourable Sackey stated that sustainable development has become a global design featuring in almost every development paradigm adding that in this concept of sustainable development, is the idea to Foster City resilience that ensures that our communities are safe, reliable and healthy.
“The vulnerabilities of our cities in recent times have threatened many lives and exposed our fragile institutional weaknesses. In the midst of these challenges however, history placed us on the scale of shining successes. Accra, of course, is not the Accra we know many years ago. The city has transformed remarkably on the scale of global cities and remain one of the busiest in Africa” she stated.
The AMA Mayor indicated “We empowered our communities to stand strong in the face of natural disasters, economic fluctuations, and social issues, and through effective disaster management systems, we have minimized the impact of calamities, safeguarding the lives and properties of our citizens.”
The theme for the anniversary celebration: “125 Years of Local Governance: Strengthening Community Resilience and Sustainable Development of The City of Accra” has been purposely carved out to champion the essence of building resilient cities while reminding ourselves of the goods and services that must be delivered by Metropolitan controls and management streams.
