Court Orders Arrest Of NPP Chairman For Stealing Metals From Broken Oda Bridge

The Akim Swedru Circuit Court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Chairman of the governing NPP in the Akim Oda Constituency in the Eastern Region.

Mr. Awudu Issaka is also accused of involving himself in an act described as “stealing” by the Circuit Court adjudicating the case.

In October 2019, some leftovers of metals used in fixing the broken bridge on the Birim River on the Oda-Nkwanta road got stolen.

During investigations, after the Ghana Highways Authority had then made a report to the police, it was revealed that Chairman Awudu had told Police personnel at a barrier that the metals were being carted to also fix another bridge in the Oda municipality.

When his two accomplices were interrogated, they also confessed to having sold the metals as scraps. This then warranted his initial arrest and arraignment before the Akim Swedru Circuit Court. The prosecutor on the case submitted to the court that the Chairman had refused to also attend court on nine different occasions when the

stealing case involving him and then the two others were called. It is also believed that he had used his political position as Chairman to evade court appearances. As a result, the court, on April 20, 2022, issued a bench warrant to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for his arrest. According to details provided in the bench

warrant, the Circuit Court Judge also indicated that the alleged act is contrary to section 124 (1) of Act 1960 (Act 29) as amended by paragraph 4 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act 1960 (Act 29).
