The defending champions of the betPawa Ghana Premier league Medeama SC had to dig deep to rescue a point at home when last season’s 15th placed team Accra Lions visited the Akoon Park in their opening league fixture of the season.
Continental engagements in the second round CAF Champions league means the meauve and yellow boys and Dreams FC were away from league action during the weekend.
The visitors stunned the champions early in the first half taking the lead in the 20th minute via full-back Samuel Gyimah.
Medeama went into the break to put their house in order coming out stronger in the early parts of the second half and registered a goal when the game was approaching the 60th minute mark.
Accra Lions looked to have snatched all three points when Ali Mohammed gave them the lead ten minutes to the end of regulation.
Medeama showed resilience firing back four minutes later through Jonathan Sowah to secure a point from the tie.
Evans Adotey will breathe a sigh of relief as he and his boys avoided an opening day defeat.
Their next target will be to qualify for the CAF Champions league Group stage as they carry a 3-1 home advantage to Horoya SC in Conakry, Guinea.
The second leg of the tie is scheduled for 29 September 2023.
