Deputy Minister for Transport of the Republic, Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli, has praised the Regional Maritime University’s (RMU) unwavering dedication to excellence, professionalism and continuous improvements in providing top-notch education, research, and training.
He acknowledged the significant role the university has played in shaping the maritime industry and producing highly qualified professionals who have contributed to the growth and development of the sector.
The commendation was contained a keynote address he delivered at the 29th Board of Governors Meeting of the RMU in Accra.
The meeting, which commemorates the 40th anniversary of RMU’s regionalization and the 65th anniversary of its founding as a maritime education institution, gathered key stakeholders to discuss the university’s achievements and address existing challenges.
“The contribution of RMU has not only improved the standards of education and training but has also contributed to the overall safety, efficiency, and sustainability of the blue ocean economy,” stated Hon. Tampuli.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the training of manpower for the maritime industry, which contributes over 80% of customs revenue in Ghana and plays a vital role in the country’s revenue base through taxes and levies on imported and exported goods.
Addressing the challenges facing RMU, the Deputy Minister expressed concern over infrastructure, teaching and learning materials, and the loss of ISO certification, among others.
He called for constructive dialogue, collaboration, and a comprehensive review of institutional documents to realign and repurpose the university as a world-class maritime training institution.
“As members of the Board, we must provide support for this exercise to enable RMU to remain agile and adaptable, responding effectively to the industry and regional demands.”
“We must take necessary measures to ensure that RMU maintains its international standards and reputation,” Mr. Tampuli emphasized
He urged RMU to stay focused on its core mandate and align any new faculties or courses with its established objectives.
The Deputy Minister stressed the importance of building consensus on issues and upholding the principle of unity to forge a brighter future for RMU and the maritime industry.
