Domelevo strikes: Calls COVID ‘chop-chop’ senseless

Mr. Daniel Yao Domelevo has described the COVID-19 infractions cited in the auditor general’s report as a senseless dissipation of public funds.

According to him, common sense does not even allow how the funds, intended to address the pandemic, were spent.

The Former Auditor-General was speaking on the Key Points on TV3 via zoom on Saturday.

Citing an example of Adaklu where a finance lease agreement was entered into for 25 years without even evaluating whether the building was fit for purpose.

He wondered how those who made that deal could even contemplate the pandemic would last for 25 years.

He said, “After entering into a GH¢15 million agreement, now we are told they are restructuring the buildings so that they be fit for purpose at a cost of GH¢20 million out of which over GH¢13 million has already been.”

“It disturbs me, and why it is so is because there are no consequences for misbehaviour and misuse of public funds.”

Mr. Domelevo cited the case of Malawi when its audit report came out, the Malawian President made a public statement announcing the sacking of a Minister who was a member of his cabinet because the minister used part of the country’s covid fund to travel to Zambia.

According to Mr. Domelevol, even though the Minister refunded the money, however, because it was not available at the time for the intended purpose, the Malawian President released him from his cabinet.

“Again, he directed all the officers cited in the case to be arrested.”

“That is what I am expecting. We should do something like that to stop the dissipation and thievery of public funds in Ghana,” he added.
