Dr. Afriyie Akoto, a flag bearer hopeful of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed concern over the party’s performance in the 2020 elections.
He said the NPP government had delivered on its promises, but the voters did not appreciate its achievements.
The NPP, he said, faced a reality check when it almost lost power to the opposition.
According to him, the current situation of a hung parliament, with 137 seats for each side, was unprecedented in the Fourth Republic.
Speaking on Starr FM Dr. Afriyie Akoto said: “We did very well in our first term under President Akufo-Addo, but the people of Ghana did not reward us with a clear mandate. They were ready to kick us out. Why is that? What did we do wrong?”
He added that the NPP’s presidential margin over former President Mahama, which was over one million votes in 2016, was reduced by half in 2020.
He attributed the party’s poor showing to its internal weaknesses. He said: “The party is our main instrument for campaigning, but the party is not healthy. The party is not in a coma, but it is not well either. The party is on a sick bed. I think my diagnosis was correct, and that’s why we nearly lost the election.”
