E-levy: Travel abroad for medicare – Afenyo-Markin chides Minority MPs

Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has chided members of the Minority to honour their commitments and travel abroad for medicare.

The NDC MPs, he said, should not endanger their lives by staying in Parliament simply to vote against the electronic transaction levy bill when they should be abroad attending to their health.

“…Your Chief Muntaka, he is the Head of the forces of darkness. He is whipping you people and says you should not travel for health reasons.”

“He says don’t travel but you are supposed to travel. Hon John Jinapor says there are many of you with health concerns and yet you are not travelling for whatever reason,” he stated.

The Deputy leader made the call on Friday 4th February 2022 while responding to questions that came up from presentation of the business statement for next week.

Members of the Minority have demanded the Majority leader and Chairman of the Business Committee, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, to give a clarification when the E-levy Bill will presented to House debate.

The caucus expressed displeasure at what it says is secrecy shrouding the Bill and when it will be presented contrary to Standing Orders 53 and 106, which spell out how business should be scheduled in the House.

The uncertainty surrounding the E-levy, the NDC MPs say, is making travel plans difficult.

Hon. Afenyo-Markin noted that the House can still conduct business even in the absence of the Minority.

“He said many of you are supposed to travel for health reviews and all that but why are you not travelling? The rule says members available and voting so what is your problem?”

“They should travel,” he dared the Minority members.
