E/R: Police hunt for shooter of task force commander at mining site

A suspect is on the run after shooting the leader of a task force that fights illegal mining.

The incident happened on October 18, 2023, in Asamang Tamfoe, Atewa East District, where the task force had gone to raid a mining site.

The suspect, identified as Danso, is a youth leader and miner in the area.

He and another miner, Joe, who was armed with a gun, tried to resist arrest by the task force.

Danso shot Major Patrick Don-Chebe, the Commanding Officer of the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners Taskforce, in the ribs at close range.

Danso and Joe fled the scene while the taskforce members attended to their wounded commander.

Major Patrick Don-Chebe was taken to the Kibi government hospital and later transferred to the 37 military hospital for surgery.

The police have arrested Joe, but Danso is still at large. They are conducting a manhunt to find him and bring him to justice. The police are also investigating the motive behind the shooting and the source of the firearms used by the suspects.
