Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister of Communications has reiterated her commitment to supporting the educational needs of schools in the Ablekuma West Constituency.
She said education without which Ghana cannot develop remains her key priority.
“From day one, I have always indicated that education is number one priority for me. So whatever we can do to make the lives of our young people and their teachers a little easier we will do it”.
Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma West Constituency made the disclosure during the handing over of 350 mono-desks to Gbegbeyise Basic School in the Greater Accra Region.
The donation brings to 700 the number of mono-desks provided to the facility by the Communications Minister in less than four months.
Speaking to newsmen Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful said the gesture would help in the education of the learners at the facility whom she said would “do more exploits than we have been able to achieve” adding that “the future of this country depends on these young ones.”
She said her outfit would continue to provide the educational needs of schools in the Constituency so far as finances permit her to meet those needs.
“Right now, we know that desks for the children to sit on is a permanent problem, enrollment is increasing, you need more furniture for the children to use in the school… [we] will bring more desks to ensure that the pupils are able to social dance in this COVID times” the Minister assured.
Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful was hopeful the furniture will go a long way to meet some of the challenges that the schools in the Ablekuma West Municipality face.
Receiving the desks, the Municipal Director of Education, Christian Julius Aforla was grateful to the Minister for the gesture indicating that the donation would assist the children to better practice social distancing in the classroom and improve teaching and learning in the school.
The Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful also commissioned the newly constructed 12 seater capacity toilet facility for use by the Mpoase Methodist Basic School.
The toilet is expected to be used by the over one thousand pupils at the school.
The Minster said although the facility is woefully inadequate in view of the population of the school, she stated “but it’s a good start; we will continue to work with the community and the staff to ensure that we provide additional facilities”.
Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful inspected the progress of work on the construction of an 18-unit two story classroom block for the Mpoase Methodist Basic School.
The classroom when completed would be a better replacement for the dilapidated structure that currently houses some 1,300 learners.
Commenting on the state of project, the Women’ Activist and Senior Lawyer said she is extremely satisfied with the progress of work.
She said plans are also afoot for the construction of 18 more unit classroom blocks in order to cater for the needs of the growing population of the school.
The Ablekuma West Constituency MP disclosed that the school will be fenced to prevent the activities of miscreants on the compound and fitted with Information Communication Technology (ICT) equipment to better serve the needs of the pupils.
