Election 2024: Bawumia concedes defeat, congratulates Mahama

Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has officially acknowledged defeat in Ghana’s 2024 presidential election.

Dr. Bawumia congratulated former President John Dramani Mahama on his victory and pledged his support for a smooth transition.

Addressing the nation in a televised statement on Sunday morning marked by humility and statesmanship, Dr. Bawumia stated, “The people of Ghana have spoken. The people have voted for change at this time, and we respect that decision with all duty. Ghana is more important than our political ambitions, and we must always put Ghana first.”

Dr. Bawumia emphasized his commitment to peace and democracy, expressing gratitude to Ghanaians for their participation in the election and calling for unity.

“I am making this concession speech before the official announcement by the Electoral Commission to avoid further tension and preserve the peace of our country,” he said, adding that Ghana’s peaceful and democratic character remains its most important asset.

Reflecting on the campaign, Dr. Bawumia commended his team’s efforts and vowed to regroup.

“We may have lost the battle, but not the war. We will take stock of events and take lessons to guide us going forward,” he assured NPP supporters, urging them to look to the future with optimism.

In his message to President-elect Mahama, Dr. Bawumia pledged full cooperation in the transition process stating, “I assure His Excellency John D. Mahama of my full support in the transition process. As committed democrats, we pledge to ensure that we have a very smooth transition so that the business of government will continue seamlessly.”

Dr. Bawumia also took the opportunity to thank President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his guidance, as well as his family, campaign team, and the NPP for their support throughout the journey.

He called for responsible opposition while affirming the party’s commitment to holding the new government accountable.

The NPP, he said, will offer the needed support to the new government in a very responsible way and will scrutinize government actions for the betterment of the beloved nation.
