‘Father Christmas’ policies must go – IEA tells gov’t

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has proposed the overhaul of some major government policies to help cut down expenditure and save the distressed economy.

Speaking on Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday 21st March, the Director of research at IEA, Dr John Kwakye, advised the government to stop funding policies that are not yielding benefits to the economy.

According to him, the government is paying for everything that involves senior high school education almost as though the government is a ‘father Christmas.

He observed there are too many government policies that are populist in nature and crafted to sing the praises of the administration rather than address challenges of the country.

He said, “There are far too many programmes that are populist in nature and seek to make the government popular. We need to take a critical look at some of the programmes and amend them.”

“Free SHS is consuming so much of our resources and I am not sure as to if the expenditure cost was anticipated ahead of time.”
