Galamsey report: Minority will demand Parliamentary probe – Ato Forson

so Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has disclosed they will demand a bi-partisan probe into Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng galamsey report.

The Minority caucus, he said, supports calls for an independent investigation and indicated they will trigger this when Parliament resumes.

He assured that his side of the House will work in the interest of Ghanaians on the matter.

The leader made the call in an interview on Tuesday, May 2, during a one-day sitting of the House.

Dr. Ato Forson’s call supports similar demands by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for both Parliament and the Office of the Special Prosecutor to initiate a public enquiry into the damning galamsey report, which implicates some officials of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He said,  “This House has been urged by a vast majority of our citizens to institute a bi-partisan probe into this serious matter.”

“The Minority supports this call. We shall take steps accordingly to trigger the necessary processes for an independent probe into this matter.”

“The Minority will start a process soon to constitute an independent probe into Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s report,” he added.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, former chairman of the defunct Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), authored the report on illegal mining (galamsey) activities in 2021 and subsequently submitted it to the Chief of Staff.

He accused some government officials of interfering in his work or engaging in galamsey.

Subsequently, someone leaked the report into the public domain in April 2023.
