President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to make sure the Black Stars excel in the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Ivory Coast.
Ghana is among the 24 teams who would be battling for the coveted trophy, having last won the title 41 years ago.
The President addressing the Executive Council of the Football Association said “It’s been forty-one years since Ghana won the Africa Cup of Nations. If my memory serves me right, we have played in a couple of finals in recent times and lost on penalties in 2015. Expectations are very high, so let’s do our best to make this tournament a success”.
He said Ghanaians had passion for football, hence the need to ensure the game was on the right path.
President Akufo-Addo charged the GFA, led by Mr.Simeon-Okraku to give the technical team and the playing body the needed support to succeed in the tournament.
“As an avid football fan, I am very much aware of the challenges that confront us, as results have not been good in recent games. But you can count on me for the necessary support,” he said.
The President quizzed the Executive Council on why the Black Stars team was still struggling despite the numerous talents Ghana could boast of.
He congratulated the GFA President and the Executive Council for emerging victors at the just-ended elective congress in Tamale.
Mr. Kurt Okraku said the football body, together with the Ministry of Youth and Sports would support the Black Stars team in their journey towards the 2023 AFCON.
Ghana is caged in Group B with Cape Verde, Mozambique and Egypt.
The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament is scheduled for January 13,2024 to February 11,2024.
