Ghana Link clarifies functionality of Tema Port weighbridges following ministerial Visit

Ghana Link Network Services Ltd has refuted reports suggesting that the weighbridge system under the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS) at Tema Port was non-operational during a recent visit by the Minister for Roads and Highways, Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza, and the Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe.

In response to a publication by Daily Graphic on its X (formerly Twitter) page, Ghana Link clarified that the weighbridges were fully functional at the time of the visit.

The company emphasized that the Ministers’ concerns were about enforcement, not the system’s functionality.

“The weighbridges at Tema Port were and remain fully operational. The report suggesting otherwise is inaccurate and misleading,” Ghana Link state.

According to company, Hon. Nikpe’s inquiry focused on why some trucks were not being weighed rather than questioning whether the system was working. It explained that the process is currently in a piloting phase, which is why some trucks were allowed to bypass the weighbridges.

“This phased approach ensures a free flow of traffic and a smooth transition as we work toward full-scale implementation,” Ghana Link noted.

Ghana Link also addressed concerns regarding the handling of overloaded vehicles, explaining that Customs is working with the Ghana Highway Authority and Port Authorities to develop a seamless data-sharing mechanism on axle weight compliance once the system is fully operational.

“As part of our commitment to efficiency and compliance, we are engaging relevant authorities to enhance enforcement,” the company stated.

Ghana Link urged media outlets to engage in fact-based reporting to prevent misinformation that could undermine public confidence in Ghana’s trade and logistics infrastructure.

“We remain dedicated to transparency and efficiency in the nation’s logistics ecosystem. Misinformation only creates unnecessary panic and confusion,” the company stressed .

The weighbridge system, once fully implemented, is expected to improve road safety, reduce damage to highways caused by overloaded trucks, and enhance trade efficiency at the Tema Port.
