GOD IS WITH US

Scripture Reading: Exodus 5

So they said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please, let us go three days’ journey into the desert and sacrifice to the Lord our God, lest He fall upon us with pestilence or with the sword.” Exodus 5:3

Moses and Aaron might have been a bit shaken by Pharaoh’s refusal. For a brief moment, they might have doubted their mission, but they continued to engage Pharoah.

Pharaoh had not heard of God’s covenant name revealed to Moses, so Moses used a term that Pharaoh could relate to: ‘God of the Hebrews’. In Pharaoh’s world, every god was limited to something or some activity – such as thunder, rain, fertility, a family, nation or war. God revealed Himself to Moses as I AM. I AM is all in all. That was a concept Pharaoh could not grasp so Moses related God to the Hebrews.

• The God who is above all, is with us. That’s what Moses meant when he said, ‘the God of the Hebrews has met with us’. Moses wanted Pharaoh to know that the One God who was for them was far greater than the many gods of the Egyptians.

The same God who met with Moses is the One who met with us through Christ. Through Christ Jesus, God has met with us. We come into covenant relationship with this God who is above all when we surrender our lives to Christ.

• He is our God. That means He is our Ruler. We belong to Him, and He owns us. There is a blessing in this reality. God protects whatever belongs to Him. Because we are His, He watches over us as His own property. In Christ Jesus, the God who created all things is our God.

• He is our Father. That means He is our Source. We take after Him. We are precious in His sight because we are His children. In Christ Jesus, God has imparted His nature to us. He lives in us through His Holy Spirit.

In Christ, we can call the Creator our God and Father. He is with us and for us. With this confidence, we can face the Pharoahs of life in whichever form they may come.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, you have revealed yourself to me. I am who I am because of who you are. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
