GOD’S EVERLASTING MEMORIAL

Scripture Reading: Exodus 3

Moreover God said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.’ Exodus 3:15

The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is the I AM THAT I AM. He is not God because of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He is God because of Himself. That is the God of the Bible, who revealed Himself to us through Jesus Christ.

God’s name or self-identity is I AM. All other names and descriptive appellations we have of The Lord are based on His identity as I AM. To Abraham, the Lord showed Himself as the Almighty God and Provider. Isaac experienced God as the One who made room for him. Jacob experienced God as the One who blessed him. Each of those encounters only revealed an aspect of I AM.

The Lord told Moses that His name, I AM, was an everlasting memorial. He wants us to always know Him as such. Although God revealed Himself as I AM to Moses, the revelation was not only for Moses. He told His name to Moses so that Moses would announce it to the whole of Israel and Pharaoh and the people of Egypt. To those who believe in Him, the Lord is I AM. To those who do not believe in Him, He is still I AM. Whether we believe in Him or not, the Lord God is who He is.

God’s name is for all generations. He is the I AM of the days of Moses. He is still the I AM in our days. Time and space do not affect the name of the Lord. What He did in the past, He continues to do today.

The Lord wants every generation to experience Him. When we have experienced Him for ourselves, we must help our children to also encounter Him. Then, our children must introduce their children to know the Lord as I AM. From generation to generation, each of us must have a personal encounter with the God who revealed Himself to Moses in the burning bush. Our experience of God may not include a burning bush, but it must be authentic to us.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, you are the God of all generations. Help me to have a life-changing encounter with you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
