Gov’t to launch music streaming app in November – Bawumia

Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has disclosed that Ghana’s first indigenous music streaming app will be launched in November.

This was made during an engagement with creative arts industry stakeholders on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, where he underscored the need for a homegrown platform to better serve local musicians and filmmakers.

Dr. Bawumia stated, “I’m pleased to inform you that the development of the platform is complete.”

He stressed the importance of a local streaming service to ensure fair compensation for Ghanaian artists, noting that international platforms currently provide minimal financial returns to local talent.

“Spotify and other platforms are foreign-owned, which is why the payments to our musicians are so low,” he said.

The Vice President emphasized that the new platform is a valuable investment, aiming to rectify the current imbalance by creating a dedicated space for Ghanaian content.

“Our goal is to have a local platform that houses all the music and film catalogues we can find in Ghana.”

“If I invest $100 million in the creative arts sector, I assure you, the returns will be significant,” he explained.

The app is designed to help content creators maximize their earnings, accurately track royalties, and provide a framework for better revenue management.

“Next month, in November, we are ready to launch this platform for Ghanaian musicians and filmmakers,” he confirmed, to the delight of the audience.

This initiative has been well-received by industry stakeholders, who have long advocated for a more equitable content monetization model.

The platform is expected to enhance revenue structures and offer greater control over creative works, fostering the sustainable growth of Ghana’s creative arts sector.

A leading industry figure described the development as a major step towards empowering local creatives and ensuring they reap greater financial benefits from their work.
