James Gyakye Quayson: Assin North MP sworn into office for a second time

The elected National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson has been sworn into office.

He took the oath of allegiance and the oath as a Member of Parliament administered by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin on Tuesday morning July 4th 2023.

The event becomes the second time that Gyakye Quayson is being sworn into office after taking the oath on January 7, 2021 for the first time.

The Supreme Court, however, subsequently annulled his election in the 2020 elections and the Assin North Seat was vacant.

The Court held he was not legible to hold office due because he held dual citizenship at the time he filed to
contest for the seat.

The Supreme Court then directed Parliament to expunge all records that holds Quayson as a member of the House.

The ruling prompted a by-election in the constituency conducted on 27th June 2023, which Gyakye Quayson contested and won massively.

He garnered a total of 17,245 votes, representing 57.56% of the total votes cast as declared by the Electoral
Commission.

His closest contender, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 12,630 votes, accounting for
42.15% of the votes.

NDC flagbearer, President John Dramani Mahama, party chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia and some of the party’s executives thronged the House to support the MP.

About 27 chiefs and queen mothers from the Assin Breku area also visited the House to witness the swearing of the MP.
