RB Leipzig missed the chance to go top of the Bundesliga after an Erling Haaland double was enough for Borussia Dortmund to claim a 3-1 win at the Red Bull Arena.
Following Bayern Munich’s defeat against Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday evening, first place was for the taking, but Jadon Sancho and the Norwegian spoiled the party.
Injures to Henrichs, Kampl, Kluivert, Konate, Laimer, Nkunku and newcomer Szoboszlai meant that Julian Nagelsmann couldn’t field his strongest side and thus suffered his first home defeat of the season.
To their credit, Leipzig were the better side until half time, dominating the ball but unable to really test Burki in the Dortmund goal with Dani Olmo going closest with a shot which skimmed the top of the crossbar.
After the break, Dortmund stepped things up and within 10 minutes they were upfront thanks to Sancho. Leipzig responded immediately as Olmo hit the post, but Haaland doubled the away side’s lead with his head.
Then 81 minutes in, Haaland got his 12th goal in 10 Bundesliga games to make sure of the three points. Alexander Sorloth added a late consolation for the home side.
The result means Dortmund move into the Champions League places, and are five point behind leaders Bayern, with Leipzig sitting in second, two points behind the leaders.
