The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana’s leading Herbal medicine producers, Diagnostic Herbal Industry, producers of Thorntina 74, Mr Alex Osei Owusu has disclosed that herbal medicine has the efficacy for curing multiple diseases.
According to him, plants has broad-based compounds and when extracted, one herbal medicine may carry the potential of curing many diseases and sickness making some researchers and doctors doubt it efficacy.
Mr. Owusu indicated that unlike conventional medicine where the compounds are separated and focuses on one component for treating a particular disease or sickness, a herbal medicine can and has the potential for multiple cure.
Speaking at the 7th International Society for Medicinal Plants and Environmental Development (SOMPED) 2023 conference in Accra on Friday stressed that its high time Ghanaians who still doubt the efficacy of herbal medicine for curing multiple diseases and sickness to redirect their thoughts.
He noted that even though most herbal medicines are potent, doctors find it difficult to prescribe it for their patients.
He charged researchers to shift their focus from researching into raw plants to researching into already made herbal medicines.
“It will help the general public to understand why one herbal medicine is capable of treating more than one condition and the orthodox medicine do not, this has always been the difficult question mostly thrown at the herbal medicine industry and because many practitioners are not scientists, therefore they do not subject their product to the requisite scientific analysis” Mr. Owusu disclosed.
Mr. Owusu challenged researchers to depart from the old norm of researching into raw plants and rather focus on researching into herbal products.
“Going forward, the thoughts and strategies for research must change towards herbal product because many of these producers are traditional healers who lack the scientific knowledge to analyze the various compounds of their products,” Mr. Owusu stated.
He revealed that because herbal medicine producers lack the scientific knowledge to break the compounds and ingredients, it make registration difficult and cumbersome.
“If our researchers would focus on that aspect to bring up the active ingredients of each herbal product out, it will ease the work of Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and also increase the confidence of doctors to prescribe herbal medicine for patients” he disclosed.
Mr. Owusu said “The onus lies on you (researchers) to assist FDA because as a regulator, they don’t have the time to go into the intricate of the product making registration very difficult”.
